Realism Practice

What I've been working on this weekend. I really wanted to test out my observational and realism skills using digital art. I know I can still push myself, but I'm happy that I'm making progress this summer. For this, I used Corel Painter 11. I hate using layers, so I painted everything on the starting canvas.

P.S. Tom Hiddleston makes a great muse.

Speedpaint#1: Loki FINISHED

1. Rough Sketch

 2. Blocking in colors and blending

 3. Finished Product

I checked my reference photo, and the face should have been slightly more narrow :(
But this was good practice!

Figurs n Sketchbookin'

The semester's winding down, and my head's about to implode! I don't even have a lot of classes this spring, but I've been feeling so bogged down lately. I'm behind on the sketchbook project and the pen and illustration's stressing me out so much. And then art history essay....... T___________T Self-loathing, ACTIVATE!

Drama aside, here are some class shtuffs:

Figurrr Drawin'

My second portfolio for Ani 55. Also my second time attending the SHM figure drawing session. I need to slap myself for not going at least once a week. Ok, done!

And yesterday, after a glorious afternoon nap, I found myself in a state of brief sleep paralysis. It was the first time I've ever experienced it. Scary as @#$%!
It started out like this...
I opened my eyes to the sound of the blinds rustling against the closed window. I thought, what the heck? How is that even possible? Then all of a sudden, I felt this malevolent presence inside the room. A strange sensation crept up my body, and my stomach tied into knots. I tried to hide under the covers, but my muscles refused to budge! I wanted to scream for help, but my mouth just kept itself shut. So I laid there, frozen in terror while my eyes fluttered like a camera shutter in high speed. After a minute or two passed, I finally gasped out loud and got up immediately.
Well. that just shows how messed up my sleep schedule is. Ahhh, the life of an A/I student...

Red Head Redemption

Ok. This'll probably be my last update of the month because the reversal's coming up. It's the Red Head assignment! Basically another exercise working with shadow shapes and sweet! With some highlights! This is probably my favorite homework from Ani 112a to date. I used to hate shadow shapes, but now I'm loving them cos I see them errrrrverrrywhere (as Cleveland Brown would say it).

Lauren (top left), Danielle (top right), me (bottom left), Dao (bottom right)

And here's a late Bday present from one of my longtime friends, Elaine. It's Meeko the Raccoon! :D I wonder if people think of him first every time I introduce myself...

Reversing the charcoal in less than a week...

Since my ANI 112A instructor mentioned the charcoal reversal this week, I decided to look around for pictures I'd ought to do for the project. So here's my pick, a gorgeous photo by Leanna Chong.

This one seems like a toughie, but I only have one thang to say: CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

I need a breather...

Just taking a short break from schoolwork. A quick digi-sketch of Katniss Everdeen! No reference. I tried using the facial rhythms taught in ANI 55 class to construct the face, but kind of...failed. Whatevah.

Gonna color this after the....charcoal reversal.

There are shapes in the shadows

30 minute Shadow Shape Self-Portraits!  I wasn't too sure if we were allowed to do a pencil lay-in before adding the shadow shapes so I drew straight in pen. I had to do the 2nd and 3rd portraits twice. (Messed up the proportions and such.) Now I have sketchbook pages consisting of ugly unfinished portraits -___-

1st: Why so serioussssssss.....

2nd: Boy, I look mad.

3rd: Squint squint

Another self-portrait?

An 8 hour project focusing on line quality and hierarchy. I shouldn't have chosen the saxophone as the additional object. It looks so...janky.

Rough lay-in sans background:

Added some lines:
